History

Old Vine Capital was founded by Neil Kay in San Francisco and now headquartered in Austin serving families and institutions across the US. Neil spent 12+ years in the institutional asset management industry working for both the world’s largest investment management firm and the largest independent wealth management firm and successfully built and grew multiple smaller investment firms.

Neil brings a diverse and unique level of expertise to clients of Old Vine Capital.  After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin and McCombs School of Business, Neil began his professional investing career working for the world’s largest Registered Investment Advisor, Fisher Investments in Woodside, CA.  Neil held many roles at Fisher Investments including Associate Vice President in their Institutional Group working with many of the globe’s largest pensions, foundations, and endowments and as a private client Investment Counselor where he managed a $300 million book of private client portfolio relationships.

Neil was recruited in 2013 to join the world’s largest asset management firm, BlackRock, as an iShares ETF Specialist based in San Francisco serving as a portfolio construction specialist developing and managing relationships with Private Bank Portfolios Managers and Ultra-High Net Worth Private Wealth Advisors across the Western US.  In this role, Neil raised over $1 billion in assets from institutional platform relationships and portfolio managers.

Being in the entrepreneurial heart of Silicon Valley, Neil was passionate about wanting to apply his institutional investment sales experience to building and growing an investment management firm.  In 2015, Neil was recruited as a Director and ETF Product Specialist to Lattice Strategies in San Francisco. Lattice Strategies managed the private wealth for many of Silicon Valley’s financial entrepreneurs and launched a series of multi-factor exchange traded funds (ETFs) that applied a risk-first and academically backed investment methodology.  Neil helped to grow the firm’s assets under management and Lattice Strategies was acquired by the large insurance firm and mutual fund provider, Hartford Funds.

After the successful acquisition of Lattice Strategies by Hartford Funds, Neil was then recruited in 2017 as a Managing Director of ETF Distribution at John Hancock Investments tasked with building and growing their exchange traded funds business which was sub-advised by Dimensional Fund Advisors well known for applying academic investment science to real world client portfolios.  During his time at John Hancock, Neil and his team grew the ETF business to over $4 billion in assets under management.

Outside of his professional investment career, Neil and his wife Anjou after 15+ year in San Francisco now reside in Austin and have launched several private business ventures and philanthropic organizations. After over a decade of client focused business travel, seeing every aspect of the investment management industry, and being regularly consulted by his community, Neil decided to launch Old Vine Capital to deliver true fiduciary investment guidance and portfolio management expertise to select families, individuals, foundations and institutions.
